Gamers reveal must-have desk upgrades

Most PC upgrades focus on specs like CPU, GPU, and RAM. The desk itself rarely gets attention. A recent Reddit thread in the r/buildapc community gathered responses from over 1,000 users about accessories that improved their daily setup. The suggestions revealed small changes that reduce frustration, improve comfort, and add convenience.

The overlooked basics

A desk pad topped the list of recommendations. It protects surfaces, cuts noise, and keeps mouse movements smooth. Combine with coaster use and Reddit swears even an inexpensive pad will last for years. Heated coasters also received praise, particularly for remote workers who forget their coffee. A model from the late 90s still in use proved durability isn’t a concern.

For cable management, reusable mounting tape emerged as a budget-friendly alternative to 3M Command strips. It works well for lightweight accessories like USB hubs, though it’s not ideal for painted walls.

Speakers over headphones became a recurring theme. Ear fatigue and heat buildup make long sessions uncomfortable. A $20 pair of budget speakers was enough for casual listening.

Chair casters offered an unexpected upgrade. Cheap wheels scratch floors or stick on uneven surfaces. Replacing them with smoother models costs under $20 and makes movement effortless.

Luxury that feels necessary

Macropads, popularized by Elgato’s Stream Deck, allow users to assign shortcuts to buttons. Even non-streamers found them useful for switching apps or adjusting audio. A volume controller took it further, letting users mute specific apps without digging into Windows settings.

Ubiquiti routers were the only networking recommendation. The AmpliFi Alien model, favored by Reddit users, displays network stats at a glance. Someone with a four-year-old Unifi setup still checks the dashboard daily.

Ergonomics that actually help

A better chair was the most unanimous recommendation. Refurbished Herman Miller or Steelcase models were popular, but the Staples Hyken stood out as an affordable option.

Ergonomic mice and keyboards divided opinions. Some users found them essential for wrist pain; others considered them awkward. A keyboard tray helped with posture.

Lighting reduced eye strain. A BenQ Screenbar was the premium choice, but $15 monitor backlights worked too. A footrest or hammock eased back pressure, and a sit/stand desk encouraged movement.

Most of these upgrades cost less than a mid-range GPU. The real benefit comes from the combined effect—less friction, fewer distractions, and a setup that adapts to workflows. For many, the desk is where they spend most of their waking hours. Small, deliberate choices can turn it from a place of tolerance into one of enjoyment.
